What does lawn mowing cost in the Sutherland Shire?
Updated October 2026

Everything on this page is guide pricing only. Lawn mowing is quoted per yard, and the only number that matters is the one a contractor gives you after seeing yours. That said, Sydney pricing in 2026 is well documented, and knowing the typical ranges stops you being either overcharged or suspicious of a fair price.
The short version: published Sydney guides put a standard visit anywhere from about $50 to $150, with most ordinary suburban lawns averaging around $80, and hourly rates typically sitting around $45 to $85. For a standard Shire yard, roughly $50 to $90 per visit is a sensible expectation.
Typical ranges
- Standard yard, maintained: roughly $50 to $90 per visit for a typical Shire block with front and back lawn, edges included. Small courtyard lawns can come in under that.
- Large yard: roughly $90 to $150 or more per visit once the lawn area grows, there are multiple sections, or the block runs long. Genuinely big blocks move into acreage and ride-on pricing, which is quoted on area and terrain.
- Overgrown premium: a lawn that has run long is a different job, multiple passes, slower going, several times the green waste. Expect a premium over the standard price for the same yard, often half as much again, sometimes double for knee-high kikuyu. See one-off overgrown mowing.
- Regular rounds: fortnightly or monthly visits on a standing round are usually priced below one-off visits for the same yard, because the job is quicker every time. See regular lawn mowing.
What moves the price
- Size is the biggest factor, more grass is more time.
- Slope slows everything down and can force hand mowing on ground a bigger mower would otherwise cover.
- Access matters more than people expect. A locked or narrow side gate that forces gear through the house, or a backyard with no mower access at all, adds time to every visit.
- Green waste volume is the hidden variable. Clippings from a maintained lawn are trivial, a rescue cut can fill a trailer. Whether disposal is included, charged per load or left in your green bin is a quote question, ask it every time.
- Edges and obstacles add minutes each: long path edges, garden beds, trampolines, play equipment, scattered trees.
- Grass type and season play a part too. Shire kikuyu in a wet January grows faster than anything, and a lawn that doubled in height between visits takes longer to cut.
Frequently asked questions
Is it cheaper on a regular round?
Per visit, usually yes, but the honest full answer is that you pay more across the year because you are buying more visits. What the round buys is a lawn that never becomes a $150-plus rescue job, a quicker and therefore cheaper individual visit, and a standing spot in the contractor's schedule during spring when one-off slots are scarce. If you only want the lawn cut a few times a year, one-offs are the cheaper total, you just live with longer grass between them.
Why do quotes for the same lawn vary so much?
Different operators carry different costs, gear, insurance, travel, tipping fees, and some are simply busier than others. A quote well above the ranges here deserves a second opinion, and a quote far below them often means corners, no insurance or no waste disposal. Two or three quotes is enough to find the fair middle.
Do these prices include GST and green waste removal?
Assume nothing, ask both questions when you get the quote. Some contractors quote inclusive of GST, some add it. Green waste is the same, sometimes included, sometimes per load. The contractors we refer price the job before any work starts, so there is no reason to be surprised later.
